Year four pupils around the Island have been receiving the latest edition of Jersey Post’s Collectables album. This is the third year that Jersey Post has produced the free stamp album and activity book which is designed to introduce schoolchildren to the traditional hobby of stamp collecting. Over a thousand copies will be gifted to children aged 8 – 9, together with packets of mixed stamps.
The 40-page album, which is being distributed in time for the Easter holidays, explores Jersey Post stamp issues across one year with themes including Jersey Cows, Nigel Mansell and local superhero, Man of Steel. There are illustrated spaces for children to stick their stamps, as well as fun facts, colourful illustrations, puzzles and quiz questions.
“The feedback we have received from schools and children since launching the initiative has been really positive and it’s brilliant to see children so enthused about stamps and stamp collecting,” comments Rachel MacKenzie, Philatelic Marketing Manager at Jersey Post. “The Collectables album is designed to get children talking about stamps and sharing and swapping with each other and as in previous years, we’re giving away a free packet of stamps with each album so the children can get started straight away. Not only is stamp collecting a fun hobby, it’s also a great way of learning about the Island in which we live and the Collectables album is packed with information about local history, wildlife and culture, all presented in a fun and appealing way.”
The new albums have been well received by the children at St Martin’s Primary School as year four teacher, Mr Guegan, explains: “The children are really enthused by it. Children of this age are not usually interested in stamp collecting but the way the Collectables album is presented is really engaging. The children are already asking where they can get more stamps from.”
The children’s responses have been equally encouraging:
“It’s really fun! And it’s really interesting. I think it helps people to understand what the stamps mean and it gets people more interested in them.”
Arran Hunt, Age 9
“I like it because you get lots of different stamps and, if you like, you can swap them with people.”
Maddie Doyle, Age 9
“I like the Nigel Mansell stamps best because I like Formula One.”
Rudy Coxshall, Age 8
“It’s fun! I like licking the stamps and sticking them in.”
Caitlyn Ollivier, Age 9
“My favourite is pages 22 to 23 because it’s the Man of Steel and the stamps are special and shiny.”
Estelle Lemonnier, Age 8
Copies of The Collectables and packets of stamps are being delivered to year four classes across the Island. Additional packets of stamps are available from Broad Street post office in St Helier priced at 20p for smaller packets and 50p for larger packets.
