Six stamps featuring some of the Tall Ships which have visited Jersey will be issued by Jersey Post on 8 August 2013.The stamps have been painted by Tony Theobald and depict the ships in full sail. They will be available to purchase on issue date from the main Post Office in St Helier, Jersey and are available to pre-order now from the Jersey Philatelic Bureau on 01534 516320 or online at: www.jerseystamps.com
Jersey Post’s Philatelic Product Manager, Mrs Melanie Gouzinis explained: “We are fortunate that Jersey is such a popular destination for sailors and many of these magnificent ships continue to visit the island on regular basis. The Tall Ships which visit Jersey often moor up alongside Albert Pier in the island’s main harbour, and can usually be admired for a few days before they set sail again.”
Tall ships are large traditionally-rigged sailing ships and modern vessels include topsail schooners, barques, brigantines and brigs. Many of them belong to organisations which provide sailing opportunities for the general public, children and the disabled. The ships which feature on the new set of stamps are: Stavros S Niarchos, HM Bark Endeavour, STS Tenacious, Eye of The Wind, Prince William and Sk/S Christian Radich.
“Stamps with a nautical theme are firm favourites with our collectors,” continued Mrs Gouzinis, “and the stamp artist is also highly respected within the philatelic world”. This is the 38th stamp commission for Tony Theobald and previous issues include, ‘The Centenary of the Olympic Games’, ‘Jersey Rescue Craft’ and ‘Railways III’.
