Jersey stamps mark 75 years since The Battle of Britain

Six stamps and a Miniature Sheet commemorating the 75th anniversary of The Battle of Britain will be issued by Jersey Post on 10 July 2015. The designs are linked to an earlier stamp issue Victory & Liberation, issued on 9 May 2015, by a portrait of Sir Winston Churchill. Both issues are the result of a creative collaboration between Hat-Trick Design, London and Norwegian artist and engraver Martin Mörck.

The Battle of Britain was a Second World War air campaign between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force, which took place from July to September 1940. The six stamps in this issue depict some of the key factors that enabled Britain to survive the Battle and which helped form a springboard for allied victory in World War Two.

“For both The Battle of Britain and Victory & Liberation stamps, Hat-Trick have taken inspiration from 1940s poster illustrations and typography and the effect is very striking,” explains Chris Elligott, Jersey Post’s Philatelic Production Co-ordinator. “RAF-inspired blues and reds have been used across The Battle of Britain issue and, if you look closely, you will see facts about the Battle printed in micro text within the designs.”

As with Victory & Liberation, the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill appears on the Miniature Sheet, printed with an intaglio technique using a steel-plate engraving created by Martin Mörck. The engraving is based on an original photograph by Yousuf Karsh taken in Canada in 1941. Islanders can see Martin’s original line drawing, from which the engraving was created, at Broad Street post office in St Helier, Jersey, where it will be on display from issue day.

Jersey Post has also produced a limited edition Sir Winston Churchill Commemorative Book. Containing the intaglio Miniature Sheets from both the Victory & Liberation and The Battle of Britain stamp issues, it features additional photography and information about Sir Winston Churchill as well as an interview with Martin Mörck and photographs of him producing the engraving. Only a limited number of these books are available and customers are being urged to contact the Jersey Philatelic Bureau to place their order as soon as possible.

The stamps and philatelic stamp products such as stamp sets, Miniature Sheets, Souvenir Sheetlets, First Day Covers and Presentation Packs can be ordered now at or by telephoning the Jersey Philatelic Bureau on (01534) 516320. The stamps will be available to buy from all branches of Jersey Post from Friday 10 July 2015, with First Day Covers and Presentation Packs available from the main post office at Broad Street.
