Eight stamps featuring images from the Hubble Space Telescope will be issued by Jersey Post on 24 April 2015, commemorating 25 years since its launch into space.
Hubble was launched by NASA on 24 April 1990 attached to the Space Shuttle Discovery. The next day, it was released into low Earth orbit, opening a new chapter in humanity’s understanding of space. Since that time, Hubble has provided over one million observations, noted 38,000 celestial targets and has circled Earth more than three billion times, travelling at a speed of 17,500 mph.
The stamps are accompanied by a Miniature Sheet featuring the Hubble Space Telescope itself. Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post, explains: “The images and observations recorded and beamed back to Earth by Hubble are absolutely mesmerising. By orbiting outside the distortion of the Earth’s atmosphere, it is able to capture images with almost no background light, making them the most visible images of space ever.”
One of NASA's most successful missions ever launched, the Hubble Space Telescope provides data for thousands of astronomers around the world. Its findings are responsible for more than 11,000 scientific papers published to date, making it one of the most productive scientific instruments ever built.
Mrs Gouzinis continues: “Hubble has transformed the way scientists look at the universe. Its 25th anniversary is a significant milestone and we are delighted to commemorate it with this new set of stamps.”
The launch of the stamps follows the excitement around last month’s solar eclipse which saw people across the Island looking to the skies to see the moon pass in front of the sun. Fortunately, the stars, planets and galaxies depicted on Jersey Post’s stamps can be seen even on a cloudy day.
The stamps will be available to buy from all branches of Jersey Post from 24 April 2015. Philatelic stamp products such as stamp sets, the Miniature Sheet, First Day Covers and Presentation Packs will be available from the main post office at Broad Street, St Helier, Jersey on issue day and can be ordered now at www.jerseystamps.com or by phoning the Jersey Philatelic Bureau on: 00 44 (0)1534 616320.
