D-Day remembered on Jersey stamps

Six stamps and a Miniature Sheet will be issued by Jersey Post on 6 June 2014, marking the 70th anniversary of the famous World War II campaign that became known as D-Day or the Invasion of Normandy.

The stamps, painted by David Pentland, depict some of the events that took place under the codename Operation Overlord when 150,000 soldiers of the Allied Forces of Britain, America, Canada and Free France attacked German forces on the coast of Normandy, France; the cross-Channel operations which placed all naval issues under the command of Admiral Bertram Ramsey were given the name Operation Neptune.

Jersey Post’s Philatelic Product Manager, Melanie Gouzinis, explains: “The landings that commenced at Normandy on 6 June 1944 involved over 6,000 ships carrying troops, weapons, tanks and equipment and D-Day is perhaps most remembered by this aspect of the campaign. Preparation was tantamount to the success of the operation, involving air strikes, deception plans, airborne troops and sabotage and our aim was to present a series of paintings which capture the different aspects of the campaign.”

David Pentland is a self-taught artist with a large portfolio of military illustrations. The paintings chosen for the stamps feature a Sherman Crab flail tank at Sword Beach, U.S. Paratroopers descending on Saint Mere Eglise, minesweeping at Gold Beach, storming Pegasus Bridge, the Screaming Eagles advancing towards Carentan and a PIAT team and riflemen pushing inland towards Caen. The Miniature Sheet depicts Commandos, led by Lord Lovat, being piped past the liberators of the Caen Canal (Pegasus) Bridge by piper Bill Millin.

The stamps will be available to buy from all branches of Jersey Post from 6 June 2014.
