A set of four stamps depicting musical instruments will be issued by Jersey Post on 25 March 2014. The stamps have been designed by award-winning rock illustrator, Mark Wilkinson, and represent the variety of live music events that take place in Jersey throughout the year.
Jersey Post’s Philatelic Product Manager, Melanie Gouzinis explains: “Every year, we are given a title to interpret by PostEurop, the trade association that has been representing European public postal operators since 1993. This year, the title is ‘Musical Instruments’, giving us a great opportunity to promote the island as the major venue for music performances and festivals that it has become over the years. All the members of PostEurop can take part and it is always interesting to see how other postal administrations interpret the theme.”
Different musical genres and instruments are depicted on the stamps described here by the artist: “The first stamp features the Gibson Sunburst electric guitar, the shape of which also forms a border for one of the Jersey rock festival crowds. The piano was used for the Liberation classical music festival, and the saxophone for the Jazz festival. The banjo is featured in front of one of the colourful tents often seen at folk festivals and a border design behind shows some of the Jersey coastline. I really enjoyed doing these designs; I wanted to create a set of very colourful stamps that suit the subject matter of musical instruments together with some of the various festivals that are staged in Jersey.”
Mark Wilkinson is the artist behind artworks produced for bands such as Marillion and The Darkness and he has previously created the artwork for Jersey Post’s stamp issues commemorating 100 years since the sinking of the Titanic and Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’.
