Lunar New Year – Year of the Dog

The Year of the Dog is the subject of Jersey Post’s first stamp issue of 2018, released on Wednesday 5 January. Designed by Wang Huming in Beijing, China, the issue comprises a single stamp and a Miniature Sheet (pictured) and forms the third part in Jersey Post’s series celebrating the Lunar New Year, preceded by Year of the Rooster (2017) and Year of the Monkey (2016).

2018 is the lunar Wuxu year and the dog which features on the stamp is a typical Beijing pet, a pug, wearing a collar with a bell; in the background is the Chinese word for dog.

In Chinese culture, dogs represent dedication to hard work, loyalty and faithfulness. People love them and they are considered to be good friends to humans. People born in the year of the Wuxu dog are serious and have a responsible attitude towards work. They are born with a good nature and are always ready to help others.

The Miniature Sheet illustration shows two puppies playing with their mother, designed to resemble a typical house dog in China.

“The Chinese New Year is the most important celebration in the Chinese calendar”, commented Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post. “In 2018 it begins on 16 February and is when families come together.  We are honoured to be able to work with Wang Huming once again.  He is the Deputy Chief Designer of the Postage Stamp Printing Bureau of China Post and has been continuously elected as the most loved stamp designer by Chinese collectors.
